Teaching Toddlers to Be Gentle With Dogs: Simple Habits That Work

As babies become mobile, the way they treat the family dog needs guidance.

Model gentle touch

Show your toddler how to stroke softly along the back, using an open hand. Say 'gentle' in a calm voice and praise them when they copy you.

Teach 'ask first'

Encourage children to let a dog sniff their hand and to check with an adult before touching. Never approach a dog that is eating, sleeping, or chewing a toy.

No hugging, no face-to-face

Many dogs find hugs and faces close to theirs threatening. Teach children to pet the shoulder or chest instead.

Respect the dog's space

Make the dog's bed or crate off-limits. If the dog walks away, let it go.

Keep sessions short and positive

Let the child hand over a treat while an adult holds the dog's attention, then end while everyone is happy.

Supervise every time

Young children cannot judge a dog's mood. Adults need to be present and ready to step in, however sweet the dog is.
