10 Dog and Baby Safety Rules Every Family Should Follow

A short checklist for households where a baby and a large dog live together.

1. Always supervise

Never leave a baby alone with any dog. Supervision means an adult is watching and able to react, not just in the same house.

2. Give the dog an escape

Provide a bed, crate, or room the dog can go to. Teach everyone, children included, that the dog is left alone there.

3. Keep food and toys apart

Dogs can guard food, bones, and toys. Feed the dog away from the baby, and pick up chews when the baby is mobile.

4. Watch body language

Learn the signs of stress, such as stiffness, lip licking, and turning away, and separate them before it escalates.

5. No grabbing, climbing or riding

Large dogs may tolerate a lot, but ears, tails, and backs are not handles. Teach gentle touch from the start.

6. Keep training up

Reinforce sit, leave it, and stay. Reliable cues make crowded, noisy days easier to manage.

7. Exercise the dog

A tired dog is calmer. Keep up walks and play even when life is busy.

8. Keep vet care current

Vaccines, parasite control, and regular checkups protect everyone. Pain or illness can change a dog's behaviour, so check with your vet if it seems different.

9. Reward calm behaviour

Praise and treat the dog when it is relaxed around the baby. It teaches that the baby means good things.

10. Ask for help early

If you see growling, snapping, or obsessive behaviour, call a qualified trainer or behaviourist before there is an incident.

General information only, not veterinary or professional training advice. No dog should be left alone with a baby. If you have concerns about your dog’s behaviour, consult a qualified veterinarian or certified trainer.
